Welcome

Hello, my name is Stiven Hernandez and on this site, you will find various of my work done during the second semester of my Freshman year at The City College of New York.

Letter of Introduction

Date: February 13, 2022

Imagine you are walking down the street and suddenly you trip and fall. I will be the type of person to pick you up and not just that, but also laugh at you. I like to help the people I can because if I ever needed help, it would be nice to have someone supporting me. My name is Stiven, for some reason my mom wanted to spell it with an “i.” For my first week of going to school in the United States I was put absent because they would pronounce my name differently and I did not know they were saying my name. There are a lot of things that interest me, some more than others. Unfortunately, I have been in a love-hate relationship with writing.

My writing increased in the 5th grade when I started drafting short essays and paragraphs. I was always told how and what to write about, most of the things were boring and I had no interest in them. This when on for a long time until one day my High School English teacher told us to write an essay about anything we want. Usually, I would turn in homework the day it is due or late, but this time I was so into writing this essay that it was done that same night. After this, I started liking the idea of writing about things. However, that was a one-time thing for the class, and I was too busy playing video games to make essays on my own time. When starting college, I was put in a class where the teacher wanted us to write essays about anything we wanted, this class gave me a new perspective on writing. Now it is not something boring, but a way to give my opinion on things. Now I have a new view on writing. However, there is something that goes hand and hand with writing.

Reading is like the vegetables on your plate, you do not want them, but you need them. Every time I needed to write something it was based on a passage or book, and reading was just a waste of time for me. During my regents exams, I had to read paragraphs two or more times to understand them because I would fall asleep midway through. My strategy was to read the first and last sentences of every paragraph and I would have an idea of what it was about, picking up quotes to support whatever I needed to support, and then start my essay. I could never concentrate when reading, I would rather listen to what people say than read what they wrote. In college there is no other option, you need to read and be able to understand what you are going to write about. However, college has not been what I expected.

When college started it was online, maybe it made it easier, but the classes seemed too simple and straightforward. I thought that I would have to do so many complicated assignments and I would only have about 24 hours to do them. To my surprise it was the opposite, the assignments were not as difficult as I thought they would be, and the time the professor gave us was very generous. They understand that we have other classes along with a life outside of school and for most classes the assignments are already on blackboard for us to see. College seemed easy, I feel like most people drop out because of monetary issues or their own bad habits.

Whenever I had a lot of time for an assignment, I would put it aside for later and that became my downfall. When I put aside an assignment, I would do the same with other classes and at the end of the week, I would have a large amount of work to do with not enough time to complete them all. Procrastination took me over and that was my mistake, but I have learned that the best time to do things is now, because we do not know about tomorrow or the day after. If I can do something now, there is no need to leave it for later.

There are many things I want to do, but it is easier for me to say I want to do something than to start and finish it. My main goal now is to graduate college and be one of the first in my family to “become a professional” as my mom would say. There are a lot of things to know about me, but for that, you would have to speak and get to know me. Just know that if you do fall while walking down the street, I will make sure to record it so we can laugh about it later.
